Versys 650 intermittent start issue
« on: Feb 25, 2019, 01:32 PM »
Hi, newbie to the forum here, had wished my first post wasn't an issue...  :138:

I turned to a versys 650 (2015) for my work commuter. Ride it every weekday all year round and love it, real work horse. I do most of the maintenance, oil, filter, sparks, brake pads etc and one of the reasons I love the bike as it's easy to get to.

However, I'm having issues with the bike not starting. I turn on ignition, wait for the fuel to prime and then the starter motor turns over but the engine doesn't start. I can press the starter for 5-10 seconds but engine not firing up. Turn off and then on again and after 2 or 3 times it starts up.

Oil, sparks and filter done 3k miles back so can't be the sparks or air, could it be a fueling problem?

I did think it was a dodgy kill switch maybe...?

thanks!

Thanks for the quick reply and link Richard!  :031: Nice little folder of fun there!

The 'How to read the FI Light' looks promising in diagnosing the issue. I take the FI light i meant to go out after a few seconds when the ignition is on or only when the engine starts (if no issues detected)? I did read that bit of the manual but it wasn't 100% clear. FYI - the FI light stays on until engine start and then goes off (as does all the other normal warning indicators).

For the self-diagnostic terminal, do you ground the wire on the sub-frame and keep it connected?

Does it do it when in neutral or when it’s in gear?
My clutch lever switch got damaged last year and was working intermittantly.
Had to start the bike in neutral until it was replaced.

Seems to do it either N or in gear. I had a thought it might be the stand switch, so took it apart and gave it good clean but hasn't remedied.

On the diagnostics, looks like someones removed the self-diagnostic terminal when they wired in the alarm, right pain in ar&e!

Only choice now is to take it to dealer and plug the ECU in to the diagnostics to pull codes right? I bet it's just a sensor that needs replacing, annoying as I would like to do this myself!

Thanks for all your help!

** UPDATE **

Took it to the dealer who ran the diagnostics and spat out the code 11.

What to do next... now I did pressure wash the bike and might've by accident got a little to high on the engine, could it be that I've forced some water in to the harnesses or actual sensor?

How would I go taking the harnesses off the TPS, not done this before and they look a bit intimidating.

Thanks for your help forum!

Code 11 - means that the main throttle Sensor is playing up - £££££££  :25:

Correct  :028:

Could just need drying out / cleaning out with Water Displacement spray type 40 or something better :notsure:

Cool, thanks, will give that a go this weekend.

Any tips on the fasteners, how do you get them off, don't want to break them...

Also, would this fit a 2015 engine? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kawasaki-KLE650-650-Versys-FHFA-Spec-Edition-2017-Throttle-Bodies-219/192556145025

Thanks,
