Left home on a Honda...come home on a Kawasaki!
« on: Mar 20, 2019, 03:51 PM »
Hey everybody. As they say in the Navy "Pull up a bollard and I'll spin you a ditty" which translates to civilian speak as "pull up a chair and I'll tell you a story". I digress.

OK, the basics; born in N. Ireland, live in Plymouth. Had a midlife crisis 2 years ago and bought a 125. Passed test start of 2018 and traded up to a Honda NC700. Currently doing my IAM and loving every minute of being on 2 wheels!

So, last Saturday out on a ride to practice what I'd learned from my last IAM ride and found myself in deepest, darkest Cornwall. As I was heading back to Plymouth I decided to stop at Damerells Motorcycles for a toilet break (and my ass was numb...NC700's seats are hard!). With the necessities out of the way I had a browse of what they had in stock.

Turned the corner and there she was;  a 2016 Versys Grand Tourer in white. One leisurely test ride later and a deposit down. So here I am, joining the Versys forum, and leaving the NC700 forum.

Welcome Padmiester,

Ex RN myself,
Are you still serving? what branch? I was testing the NC as well as the Versys and made the same choice as you have. I found the NC i tried out to be quite noisy the one thing I did like was the DCT gearbox.

Hello and welcome.

I made a different choice and went MN.
More money and less people shooting at me!!!

Good choice on the bike though!

Hi and welcome to versys forum so glad your loving your motorcycling. If there is a better pastime I would love to see it.
I live in center of the country in fact you can not get further from the sea in any direction!
This must be why I look at the live webcams at tywyn and aberdovey everynight.
High tide tonight with the full moon.
I'm going out on my bike.

Thanks for all the kind comments. I was a WEM(0) before I hung up my dolphins a long time ago.

I liked the NC700S, in my opinion a great starter big bike. Stable, reliable and 70+ mpg were its strengths. However it had no character. It did everything well but didn't excel at anything.  My mate nick-named it "Tronda" (Tractor-Honda) as it got the job done but didn't exactly set the world on fire! A rock hard seat and so-so suspension made for long rides tiring. I'm going on a European tour with my mates on bikes for my 50th next year and I realised the NC700S was going to be unsuitable. I had always been drawn to the Versys, I liked the look of the Grand Tourer spec and seeing one on Saturday at the right price was a no brainer.

So on Saturday I say goodbye to Tronda and say hello to....(best wait till my mates give her a name). Just ordering some bits and bobs to make her mine. :2:

Got to love the mid-life crisis. Long may they continue.

Enjoy the Versys!
