My Versys 650 needs a Big Brother
« on: Aug 09, 2019, 11:15 AM »
First post since I got my V 650 in Dec 2015.

So now I have an opportunity to pick up a mint 2016 Versys 1000 with loads of extras 2000kms on the clock.

I have watched endless reviews on You Tube and the consensus is that is an awesome and underatted long distance tourer.

Any experiences with this bike in the forum ?

I know the 2019 model has a few extras but it will not come to South Africa.

Have a look at the bike at the link below, and give me your thoughts.

I test rode the Versys 1000 and also the R1200GS and Tiger Sport 1050 - couldn't real fault any of them, all are great, so it was just down to personal preference which for me was the Tiger so that's what I'm going to be going for, I loved the engine most of all. Have a go on a Tiger if you can but you can't go too far wrong with the Versys 1000

Thanks for David, here is the catch - Cost - Triumph, - BMW, Ducati tourers are stupid expensive in SA...R200K plus

The V1000 sold for 159k new in SA, and this model, with all its extras and only 200kms, is a steal at R139K.

So I have put a refundable deposit on the bike, and I will mull over it for a week or so.

Sounds like a no brainer then at those prices! I'd do the same.

Just Gerrit    Gerrit.   The big Versys is and absolutely bomb proof bike, will still be going strong when the other 2 are having parts sold off them on E-bay.

A great bike for not a lot of money.  What are you waiting for       GO.       Geoff. :152:

I think the general idea you got for those reviews is right - it's a great long distance touring bike.  The question is, how are you going to use it?  And, why do you want a different bike (or additional one) than the Versys 650?

On the IVM in Nova Scotia I had a chance to spend a day riding Rob's V1K.  I know it's not a popular opinion with the V1K owners, but I think that overall the 650 is a more interesting bike.  It's a question of riding style, riding location and preferences.  I don't do trans-continental trips on most of the time.  My rides are usually more day rides, a few weekend rides and then maybe one or two longer-than-a-week trip per year.  The times I do go on longer trips, I never had a problem doing 600-700 miles a day when needed, but will readily admit it would have been less effort on the V1K, but I would have enjoyed the good riding sections less.  A lot less.

Here is what I wrote on the IVM report:
