MK3 blown fork seal
« on: Aug 26, 2019, 12:31 PM »
Hi Guys,

Can any body help, I've blown the fork seal on my left fork on my MK3.

I was riding with a mate when I hit a dip in the road while riding at some speed, this nearly had me off the bike but some how I manged to hang on, anyway I got the bike out the next morning to be greeted with fork oil all down the left fork.

I'm guessing that I hit the dip that hard, it has blown the seal, not great but hay I've done fork seals before and they are not that hard!!

So I get the work shop manual out and start looking at how to take the left fork leg apart and apparently you need a special tool (Special Tool - Rod Guide Case Wrench, 33 mm: 57001 -1744 )  which looks like this:

And is used to remove this:

Now looking on line the cheapest I can get this tool for is 100 plus 48 postage and I'm guessing some import charger as well.

Does anybody know of an alternative tool I could use for removing the rod guide.

thanks

Antony

Okay, no reply's.

I guess no body has come across this yet, I found the following that I think it will do the job:

https://www.lasertools.co.uk/product/6791

I'm going to buy it and give it a go, I'll post back how I get on so if anybody else comes across this issue they will have a link to the tool they need.

cheers

Davo

Before replacing the seal, check that you have not got some dirt under the seal which is letting oil past.
On my USA IVM adventure last year I blew the T800 hire bike's right fork seal when hitting some large potholes, as the seal compressed down the stanchion so much it got a lot of dirt under it all in one go.  :138:

I cured it by making my own fork seal cleaning tool out of a plastic drinking cup  :028: :028:

You could also buy a Sealmate  :notsure:

How to do it  :028:

Good point Tower man about the fork compressing down to where the dirt is on the leg, I never thought of that  :138:.

I'll make up a tool and give that a go.

Cheers

Result, cleaning the seal has sorted it and it's no longer leaking.

Thanks TowerMan for the tip, saved me stripping the fork down and having to buy a new tool.

...and Davo, if you ever need any tools i'm not a million miles away and can lend you tools or help you wi the job if you prefer.

I've got the tools for most jobs including fork-strips just don't ask for welding work (though i've got a mate not a mile away who's a genius TIGger)  :015:
