Rattle / Noise

Folks
Have what can be described as a Rattle / Noise from low down on the clutch side of the bike
The lever on the side of the engine that operates the clutch does not seem to go back all the way when released you can push it back a bit more with your finger about 2mm

I did notice this before replacing the clutch cable some weeks ago but thought maybe the cable was sticking
if I put my ear to the clutch cover the noise seems to be coming from there and when scooting along kind of sounds a bit like the clutch has not released fully

been looking at some youtube videos of clutch replacement which looks straight forward enough
But this close to Christmas and money a little tight would it be as well to take it apart first to see if it is the clutch that's the issue
Or get the kit and the oil and do it while it is off approx €140 the lot including the oil and gasket
Also would it be best to replace the steel plates friction plates and springs
Or just the friction plates and springs 

Is it a common thing ( rattle from there ) or am I barking up the wrong tree
Any replies / advice much appreciated :-)

  Normal free play imo. How much free play at the lever?

 If the clutch is not disengaging when you squeeze the clutch lever you won't be able to push the bike when it is in gear.

 As long as it's working properly I wouldn't worry about it. In a combined 300 000 km on two V 650s I've had no clutch problems.

There is about 3mm of play at the lever

Tomorrow I will try pushing the bike in gear with the clutch in

The clutch does not feel like it is slipping or anything going up hills  i'm just a little concerned about the noise / rattle
Maybe if I get a chance tomorrow I will record it

I picked up a chain alignment tool & also cleaned and oiled the chain
Re-checked the Tension
And also checked that the front sprocket was still tight and the locking washer still in place

Tried pushing it in gear with the clutch in and it rolled ok
