 ".then ease it back down onto the side stand" ..... being careful not to let it roll forward off the side stand in the process. (Not that I'd know about that  :015:)
 An ounce of prevention, tie off the front brake lever.

put a piece of wood under the side stand so that it brings it 90 deg vert, about 40 odd mm thick does itthen yopu can keep it there with the press of a fingeror lean against it . I also do the same to get it onto padock stands

I do use a piece of wood just seems a bad idea from the manufacturer s to not think of a better way but hey ho

If you've got hard side cases, I find it pretty easy (and stable) to check the oil using my left thigh against the side case, with right hand on the handlebar grip and a couple of fingers on the brake lever if necessary.  I've been riding for 40+ years and this is my first street bike without a center stand.  I miss my old center stands every day.

Before I fitted a centre stand, I would sit astride the bike and use a telescopic inspection mirror.  Much cheaper than the centre stand, by the way!
